  • What are antique Moroccan rugs made from?

Antique Moroccan rugs are generally made from pure sheep’s wool, making them incredibly durable, stain resistant and a great form of insulation. The wool is hand-dyed, -spun and -woven into rugs measuring no more than seven foot across. The size limit is due to the culture of the artisans. Many were and continue to be nomadic and thus needed to be able to easily transport their looms. The rug design depends on its provenance. Those made in the Atlas or Rif Mountains often have thick, tufted or looped pile while flatweave designs are more typical in warmer parts of the country. The Beni Ourani — a group of 17 tribes spread across the north of Morocco — are famed for the beautiful woollen rugs that they produce.
  • What patterns do antique Moroccan rugs have?

Antique Moroccan rugs come in a wide range of colours, patterns and styles. Diamonds and other geometric shapes feature heavily in many designs while others are characterised by ornate floral motifs that echo those found on Turkish rugs. Traditional designs were almost always woven from memory and incorporate a lot of symbolism, both in terms of the colours and shapes used. Many were also used to record stories, making them an important medium for cultural and family heritage. The main draw of antique Moroccan rugs is that every one represents a unique piece of craftsmanship.
  • How should I style my antique Moroccan rug?

Thanks to the range of colours, sizes and designs available, antique Moroccan rugs are incredibly versatile. The classic cream and black geometric patterns are a popular choice for contemporary homes and look great when paired with pendant lights with filament bulbs and industrial-style furniture. For a more organic, boho look, you could also opt for a colourful red-toned rug or a more abstract, multicoloured design. Whatever your style, you’re sure to find the perfect antique Moroccan rug on the Vinterior website.Looking for even more? Browse our full collection of beautiful antique rugs.
