  • What is art deco style?

    The Art Deco style era spans from roughly 1920 - 1940 but crossed over significantly with earlier and later eras too. It now retains a significant influence on homes and interior design, and remains one of the most popular design periods. The movement reached its peak in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, where the ‘Style Moderne’, as it was originally known, was showcased in grand fashion to the world. Art Deco style typically called on clean lines, angles and geometric shapes and often incorporated stylised and sensuous depictions of the human body, especially the female body. Archaeological discoveries such as the Mayan and Aztec civilisations were a pervasive influence too, particularly the stepped, angular forms found in these sites.

  • What is Art Deco style lighting?

    One of the best early examples of Art Deco lighting can be found in the Odeon Cinema chain, which used lighting to dramatic effect. Art Deco light designers used new materials, including moulded plastics like Bakelite and Lucite, along with chrome, alloys and moulded glass. These were often fashioned into opulent colour schemes. Ceiling lights were particularly popular among Art Deco lighting styles. Many of these deployed elaborate stepped or tapered shapes paired with bold, modern designs, often recalling architectural landmarks of the age.

    • Lighting in the spotlight

    Some of the movement’s leading lighting designers, such as Jacques-Emiles Ruhlmann and Paul Poiret, also designed entire rooms, showing just how important lighting in Art Deco styling was. Exhibitions dedicated to showcasing Art Deco lighting were held repeatedly in 1930s Paris. These, known as ‘Salons de la Lumiere’, sealed the reputations of specialist lighting designers. Meanwhile collaborations between craftsmen lead to some spectacular designs. Wrought iron specialist Edgar Brandt teamed up with glassmakers Daum Freres to forge beautiful chandeliers.
