  • Who was Niels Moller?

Neils Moller (1920 - 1982) was a Danish furniture designer who founded the J.L.Mollers Mobelfabrik company in 1944. He’s especially well remembered for his stylish, high quality chairs, tables and sideboards. The man himself, Niels Otto Moller, was born in Denmark in 1920. In 1939, he trained as a cabinet maker before studying design at the Arhus School of Design. In 1944, he then went on to found the J.L.Mollers Mobelfabrik Company which exists to this day and remains dedicated to producing furniture using his unstinting technical production methods. By 1952 J.L.Mollers Mobelfabrik designs were becoming increasingly popular, and he began to export to Germany and the United States. His most famous designs are dining chairs and armchairs in sculpted, organic forms in teak, oak, and walnut. All are considered to be shining examples of the new, modern Danish mid century style and remain popular today. By 1974 they were exporting to Japan where Moller’s minimalist style was well appreciated. The company garnered prestigious awards, such as the Danish Furniture Prize in 1974 and 1981. Today the family firm is managed by Jorgen Henrik Moller, Niels Moller’s son. It’s no wonder Niels Moller furniture is such a collectible name. Moller never sacrificed the quality of the workmanship. Each piece would take up to five years to produce. While this inevitably meant he was less prolific than many of his contemporaries, the relative scarcity of his works makes them more valuable in today’s market.
  • Choosing a Niels Moller sideboard

Niels Moller’s furniture is characterised by its simple and timeless curves. Fashioned from teak and rosewood, Moller’s pieces are typical of the best of Danish post-war design. When it comes to choosing a Niels Moller sideboard the key hallmarks to look for include clean lines, minimalistic, yet almost monolithic, design and classic teak and rosewood finishes. Every manufacturing process is done by hand, even polishing the wood of the finished product to bring out the unique quality of the wood.

    Buying Niels Moller chairs 78

Moller is perhaps best known today for his series of elegant chairs. Solid craftsmanship is the name of the game here. In fact, Moller boasts that it’s impossible to pull one of his chairs apart. In design terms Niels Moller chairs are best described as sculptural, simple and clean. Some of the most striking are the Niels Moller chairs 78 series. The design of these dining chairs is simple and graceful with just a single flourish applied to the top of the chair and legs. While being a mid century modern furniture icon, Moller’s chair 78 is a design classic that’s endured to this day.
