All about Lisa Larson

Lisa Larson, one of Sweden's most celebrated ceramicists of figurines, a portrayer of people, animals, and characters, is incredibly popular among Swedish homes and Japanese apartments alike. Adorning cottages and houses with her advent children and cat figurines, her mission was to create pottery bestsellers from the outset. Lisa Larson pottery figurines began with a passion for art, nurtured and influenced from a young age by the art pieces decorated in her family home; Lisa's childhood was abundant in art. With two large artist studios connected to her house, an avid art lover father, who would often return home bringing along new artwork, undoubtedly Lisa grew up daydreaming about becoming an artist herself one day. Developing a keen interest in handicrafts, she would design garments, carve wooden figurines and sculptures from her father's sawmill, and he encouraged Lisa to draw, paint, knit, and sew. Bicycling around rural Sweeden, Lisa Larson would sit and paint the farms she saw; owners of rural farms in her hometime even brought some of her paintings. One day Lisa was handed a bunch of blue clay, making a life-size portrait of the boy next door, a neighbour; also, an art teacher recognised her talent and encouraged Lisa to apply at the art college in Gothenburg. She was instantly accepted after submitting three wooden figurines, inspired by the artist Döderhultarn. Studying at the College of Crafts and Design in Gothenburg, Lisa enrolled in the ceramic program and knew she had found her calling. After lessons, she happily stayed behind in the college's workshop to work the clay turnable and freely create what her heart desired. Bought on board at Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory in 1953, she was hired by the famous Stig Lindberg; Stig, her mentor at Gustavsberg, became an excellent friend and colleague. Inspiring her with his free-thinking ways and humorous works, she developed her style, which we have all come to love so much today. The freedom to experiment saw the creation of the Lisa Larson cat; Stig loved the figurine so much he asked Lisa to create more animals to complete a collection, the Lilla Zoo. The collaboration at Gustavsberg yielded 26 years of outstanding success. Lisa Larson left the factory in 1980, and in 1992 founded Keramikstudion together with her collaborators Franco Nicolosi and Siv Solin. At the Gustavsberg Harbour, her beloved figurines continue to be created on the very same site where it began 70 years ago. Lisa Larson pottery figurines, aloof cats, plump children, curvy women, kind lions, and rigid politicians are illustrious examples of Swedish ceramic design in the 20th century.
